Local truly is lovely! There is a saying that when you buy from a small business, an actual person does a happy dance. Plus, you’ll be giving gifts that really are one of a kind.

Around Brisbane, there are so many boutiques, online shops and markets where you will find amazing gifts for everyone (including those hard-to-buy-for folks we all struggle with each year). Here are some of our favourite places to spread the happy-dance vibes this Christmas.

For something small …

As much as we love to spoil loved ones, the budget is a very real consideration during Christmas. To keep things in check, send small gestures such as Dello Mano brownies, festive flowers from Lillipollen, or a tin of tea from The Steepery. Deliveries are also a great way to let someone know you are thinking of them, even if you don’t have time to catch up before Christmas! Other great places to find affordable gifts are Mary Ryan’s bookshops (we’ll be gifting Resident Dog this year) and Fox & Fallow in Chermside for stationery, calendars and journals.

For something unique …

Locally, head to the GOMA store for creative gift ideas as well as art books and tea towels (and see new exhibition APT9 while you’re there). Brown’s General Store and Thousand Island Dressing have interesting selections of fashion and homewares – and you may even find something for the guys at Brown’s. If you know a dog lover, Brisbane-based online store Pablo & Co. has everything from puppy bow-ties to matching outfits for pooches and their humans.

Two of our favourite hidden gems are Ivy and Bird in Woolloongabba and The Creative Collective at Stafford. Ivy and Bird has a showroom full of jewellery and an in-store beauty salon to get your nails and brows Christmas-ready at the same time, and The Creative Collective is a trove of art and wares from local makers.

For something eco …

Being kind to the planet is a very real concern at Christmas. From gift wraps to cards and the gifts you share, there are plenty of ways to reduce your impact. Visit conscious.kin for pampering green beauty products, or Biome for unique gifts, decorations and wrapping paper.

Markets are another great way to discover all things handmade, local and eco. BrisStyle markets celebrate local and eco artisans, and there are a number of events around Brisbane ahead of Christmas. There is also the Christmas Festival happening at Brisbane Powerhouse, where you can shop and also head to a wreath-making class.

For the home …

We are home lovers at heart, so narrowing this part of the list down was a challenge! But here are some of our favourite places to seek out amazing homewares in Brisbane. Start at ARC + FAMILY for those loved ones with a green thumb. Scrumptious Reads in Red Hill has Brisbane’s best selection of cookbooks, and New Farm Editions at the Merthyr Village in New Farm, has a beautifully curated mix of goods to treasure.

Sheets on the Line is the place to go for dreamy linens for the bed and table, plus a lovely selection of gifts for the home. And there is also The White Bungalow in Nundah with interiors pieces and floaty fashions. (Oh, and our gift vouchers are also proving popular as thoughtful Christmas gifts!)

For little ones …

Kids make Christmas extra-special, and these shops are a delight to support. For all ages, K and K Creative Toys in Enoggera has a great selection of all things fun. And tiny tots will look adorable in shoes, bonnets and bibs by the local mother-daughter team behind Gertrude and the King.

Part of the reason why Christmas shopping can be so stressful is the pressure we put on ourselves to find something new, exciting or unexpected. While shopping this year, remember to be kind to yourself! – Mother Ducks.
