We love a new year’s resolution that’s shiny with optimism. Who can resist the lure of the promise of “this time next year…?” Here are important cleaning goals you’ll definitely be happy you kept in 2016.
1. Reduce Chemicals
If you set no other cleaning goal this year, aim to reduce the amount of chemicals you clean with. We regularly post natural cleaning tips here and on our Facebook page, and our teams use brands like Method. Chemical laden cleaners can aggravate conditions such as eczema and asthma, linger on surfaces and food preparation areas, pollute the environment in their manufacture and use, and cost more than natural products like vinegar.
2. Get Help
The best will in the world can be thwarted by day-to-day life. There’s no need to spend your free time scrubbing and tidying when you can get the experts in to take care of it while you’re spending time on more enjoyable goals.
3. Have a Routine
Being organised is a habit, and having a routine is the easiest way to get and keep your home clean and tidy. It may seem basic, but routines like sorting your dirty washing into a whites and coloured basket as you get undressed, or getting the kids to unload the dishwasher before they jump on screens in the afternoon will soon become a way of life no one questions.
4. Stop Comparing Your Home to Others
This is your home. You live here, not your neighbours, your colleagues, or anyone else you know. Flick through mags and enjoy other people’s perfectly styled homes by all means, be inspired, but don’t set beat yourself up if your “perfect” isn’t Pinterest worthy. As long as it’s perfect for you, that’s all that matters.
5. Have a Monthly Project
Make an area of your home your monthly project and chip away at it over a few weeks. It could be anything from clearing and organising a clutter-magnet of a corner, to getting your carpets cleaned, or even completely redecorating a room. Giving yourself a finite amount of time to focus specifically on it means you’re more likely to get it done.
