Carpet isn’t cheap. Experts recommend you should invest in the best quality carpet and underlay you can afford – especially for high traffic areas like hallways and living rooms – and naturally you want your flooring to stay looking as pristine as the day it was laid.
Here is everything you need to know to take care of your carpet so it continues to look fantastic.
Stop the Dirt
The easiest way to keep your flooring clean is to stop it from getting dirty in the first place. While we know that’s next to impossible unless you want to put it under glass and admire it from afar, you can minimise the dirt getting tracked over your carpet by using good doormats inside and outside the main entrances to your home, as well as encouraging family to leave their shoes off when they are walking on the carpet.
Effective vacuuming requires more than simply swishing the nozzle around and picking up the obvious bits. To vacuum properly make sure you:
- vacuum in both directions
- empty the drum and clean the filter after every use
- take your time with each sweep so the brushes can actually move the carpet fibres rather than swish over the top
- pay attention to the nooks and crannies – dirt and dust that has settled here may not be visible but it can migrate to other parts of your floor
- have a regular routine for vacuuming, not just when you think your floor looks dirty
Fast Spot Removal
As with clothing, the faster you act to remove a spillage or mark, the less likely it is to stain your carpet. You don’t have to whip out the carpet cleaner in the middle of a party, but effective spot cleaning as soon as possible after the event will make complete removal of the mark easier. We have a whole article about stain removal and you can read it here.
The above three steps will help prevent your carpet from becoming worn and grubby, but they won’t remove every speck of dirt the way a good deep clean will, so you should have your carpets steam cleaned at least once a year, and twice if you a busy household or you suffer with allergies.
Modern professional carpet cleaners, like those we use at Family Clean, use heat extraction and super suction to remove every last trace of dirt and detergent from your carpets and rugs. Dry cleaning doesn’t get deep down in to the fibres, while the type of domestic cleaners you can hire or buy don’t have the suction power to remove all the soap and water which attracts dirt and can also cause your underlay to rot.
We at Family Clean are experts at refreshing tired, dirty carpets and giving them a new lease on life. We can do the same for your carpet so before you think about replacing it, ask about our Expert Carpet and Upholstry Cleaning Service.
