With the outcome of the current general election being in limbo for days it’s been a nerve-wracking few weeks for small business owners. Often the focus is on the large faceless corporations who generate the most revenue when shaping policies, but small businesses have value too, providing a flexible, personal service focused less on the bottom line and more on making a difference for our customers, suppliers, and employees.
The Ripple Effect
The ripple you create by buying from an independent local business can be huge. Let’s say you buy a top for your friend’s birthday. You’re not only helping the boutique you buy it from, but the local designer who sells through them. If you pop into the stationary shop next door and buy gift wrap and a card you’re helping them, the small designer who created the paper, and the local printer they used to manufacture it. On top of doing all that good, you’re likely to be getting a standard of service far superior to a chain store as the person serving you has a vested interested in your satisfaction and takes pride in the quality of the goods and service you receive.
Use it or Lose It
All businesses need customers to survive and flourish. We’re lucky to live and work in an area which is packed with innovative businesses run by enthusiastic people who are passionate about what they’re doing. Coffee shops with character, boutiques stocking local designer labels, market stalls packed with colourful fresh produce, and florists with beautiful wares spilling onto the footpath – these businesses give New Farm and the surrounding area the ambience and charm we love about living here. Many local business owners live and work in the area which adds to the friendly community feel our neighbourhood has. Small retail businesses have been hit really hard in the last year or two and if we don’t support the cute shops we love to look at they will disappear to be replaced by anonymous chains.
Support Small. Support Local
Little acts make an enormous difference. Swap your Monday chainstore coffee for a wake up at somewhere like VUE Coffee Lounge for the consistently good DiBella Coffee, or Sourced Grocer – our one-stop-shop for fabulous gourmet finds, yummy brekky, fresh produce and of course great coffee! Sun and Earth Organics offer really nourishing, wholesome food to keep healthier this winter.
Another fabulous alternative to mainstream retail, New Farm Editions is a must visit for beautiful & eclectic homewares & gifts. For unbeatable sandwiches (& the friendliest service) the Bakeologists have it made! For the kiddies, we love The Cubby House, beautiful shoes and are 100% Made in Spain and we love Groovy Kids for their great collection of clothes and toys, that you don’t see everywhere.
And a huge THANK YOU for your continued support of Family Clean, we’re so very grateful for our local support and will continue working hard to make you the happiest customers in the Brisbane!
