“Surround yourself with people who make you happy. People who make you laugh, who help you when you’re in need. People who genuinely care. They are the ones worth keeping in your life. Everyone else is just passing through.”
– Karl Marx
Today, I met with two beautiful crew members, Giovana and Guilherme. You could feel the buzz in the office as Motherducks anticipated their arrival. “G and G are here,” was called out as the bell rung – an endearing name that only alludes to their valued place at Family Clean. Both walked in with such enlightening smiles, that kind of smile that can immediately send a positive vibe through you. Their presence was embraced with a warm hello and there soon became a whirr of chatter. I sat back and took a moment to take this in – it looked like family.
Six months ago, Giovanna and Guilherme jumped on a plane from Sao Palo, Brazil, in search of a better quality of life here in Brisbane. With a struggling economy, their town in Sao Palo was not safe. A sense of security is every human beings’ right and they could find it here, amidst the trees of South Bank Parklands, and the hustle and bustle of Queen Street Mall. Everyday safety we take for granted, is a luxury they appreciate. “Now I can walk on the street without fear,” Giovanna tells me. She laughs as she continues with a joyful account about how her and Guilherme can also now go for a swim together at the beach without fearing their stuff will be nicked from the shore line.
It is clear when you are talking to them that Giovanna and Guilherme are both very educated, intelligent people with strong family values. It seemed fate was meant to bring these two together. On one side of the road, in their home town, Guilherme’s family have owned an ice cream business for the past 39 years and on the other side Giovanna’s family have owned their hardware business for the past 35 years. So, it’s no surprise they fitted in so well to our family business here in Brisbane. “We feel like your family,” Guilherme genuinely looked at Joey and I to say. To hear those words was humbling, to be providing a home away from home for these two, and many more, made my day.
Hearing their stories, it is evident they go above and beyond in what they do for our customers. Going the extra mile to clean an in-house aquarium for one family and dusting the ceiling fans for an elderly lady. They also talk fondly of their customers, whom they obviously enjoy a close relationship with…
We are incredibly lucky to have authentic, good people like Giovanna and Guilherme at Family Clean; it is the soul and foundation of what we do.
This made me wonder about how, in life, you are a perfect product of your environment. There is a theory that you become most like the five people you are around the most…
Therefore, choosing wisely is an investment in who you are and who you will become – this is the same for our business.
We are creatures of habit and so choosing the right ‘influencers’ in your life holds a certain gravity; we are constantly shaped and moulded by our family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and that identity can stick. The importance of surrounding yourself with people who will enrich, inspire, empower and motivate you is something we don’t necessarily always make a conscious effort to do. Sometimes we may believe that we are wonder woman or super man and we can be successful people on our own. Yes, your own self has a lot to do with your future success, but it would be ignorant not to realise how others are a vital part in getting you there.
Write down the qualities of the people you spend the most time with. Would you call them positive people? Happy? Now think of how they interact and affect you.
- Do they make you feel like you have what it takes to reach your goals?
- Do they support you?
- Do you feel happy and energised after spending time with them?
If you answered “yes” to these questions, you’re probably already surrounded by the good people you need.
